Sea you in court
Here’s a whale of a tale for you.
In a US court, 5 killer whales have been named as plaintiffs in a lawsuit that argues they deserve the same constitutional protection from slavery as humans.
A US judge must now consider this complaint made by People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals’ (Peta), which says the whales at SeaWorld marine parks are treated like slaves.
Lawyers for the whales claim that this is a historic case because it’s the first time a court is considering whether animals can be enslaved “because they happen to not have been born human.”
Lawyers for SeaWorld, however, counter that “neither orcas nor any other animal were included in the ‘We the people’… when the Constitution was adopted.”
Although this story seems fishy at first, if the case proceeds it may set precedence for the rights of all animals – including police dogs and livestock.
